SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL MENTAL HEALTH. Child and Adolescent mental health needs must always be supported. But can you recognise them? Supporting those with Social and Emotional Mental Health needs requires, discipline, dedication and emotional literacy. Psychologists have often initiated their careers within this field, utilising their analytical side and developing their key skills of compassion and communication for further careers in different fields of Psychology.
COMPASS POINTS. A degree in Psychology or an MSc in Psychology or associated disciplines is a good grounding to beginning a career in Mental Health. It is vital that you gain SEN, SEMH, or specific mental health experience that will allow you to add to your theoretical experiences and knowledge. Experiences can be gained in a voluntary capacity such as a counselling volunteer, working in a mental health care facility, or on an outreach program sponsored by a local authority or government initiative.
Advanced experiences would include supporting Social and Emotional Mental Health needs in a school or Alternative Provision, either as a Key Worker, Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Mentor or Well-being Support Officer.
