CAREER DESTINATION

DOCTOR, PSYCHIATRIST OR PATHOLOGIST

THE NOBLE PROFESSIONS, THE KNIGHTS OF THE NHS. As with nursing the opportunities to branch into different areas of medicine are huge.

COMPASS POINTS FOR PSYCHIATRY. The singular route into psychiatry is via a degree in medicine recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC). Similar to nursing this will be followed by two years of Foundation Training within a recognised health department. After gaining your Foundation Achievement of Competency Document (FACD) you will begin training as a Psychiatrist across 6 years of platformed learning. Your initial 3 years will see you training in multiple psychiatry settings.  The experiences here can last up to 6 months, often in diverse locations across healthcare and the communities you serve in.

It is expected in the following 3 years, that you begin to specialise in your chosen field. All assessments are made by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Once successfully completed you will be accredited with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FCRP).

COMPASS POINTS FOR PATHOLOGY. As with psychiatry a medical degree is followed by two years of foundation training, common to all medical graduates. Here you may find yourself as a junior doctor in different healthcare departments.

Pathologists will also be awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) once they complete their journey. This can only happen after you have completed a degree in medicine recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC). Pathology has different unique branches of medical science where you can develop and hone your scientific expertise. For example Medical microbiology and virology is an essential part of medical microbiology where you will diagnose, treat and manage prevention of infections in hospitals and the community. In this field of pathology you play a key part in transferring knowledge from the lab to practical medical treatment in the community. Medical virology is essential for understanding and developing treatments for emerging viruses. Formal assessment through exams is essential for you to gain fellowship of The Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath).

No matter how long the path, these career destinations play a significant part in the stability of our developed world. The options for progression are vast and your potential can be harnessed with focussed career directions.
