Next steps for aspiring teachers

Updated: Oct 7, 2020

More information for Aspiring Teachers For those ready to teach - There are a variety of teacher training courses out there. University-led or school-led.

The most conventional and traditional route into teaching, a PGCE consists of a combination of classroom experience and time spent at University. By sharing time between the two, you will develop practical experience across 2 to 3 school-based placements applying teaching methodology and pedagogical theories. Costing £9,000, you will need a UK recognised degree and a grade 4 (C) in GCSE Maths and English Language (+ Science for Primary).

If you’re looking for a more practical based route into teaching, School Direct is the one for you. You will be based in one school, where you will learn from experienced teachers, while you work towards QTS. Most School Direct courses consist of a PGCE, but some do not so always check with the provider before applying.

For those that do have a PGCE included, schools will be partnered (alliance) with particular universities and you will be assigned a personal university tutor. Having previous experience (not necessarily in education) is favourable and recommended for your School Direct application. For graduates or career changers, with a 2:1 or above, Teach First is a two year, salaried route to a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Leadership. Its strong emphasis on developing teaching and leadership skills means you will achieve QTS in year 1 then go on to complete your newly qualified teacher placement in your second year. You will also have the opportunity to complete an optional third year to complete your Master’s.

Alongside a 2:1 on your degree you must also hold a grade 4 (C) in English and maths, plus Science for Primary. The newest route into teaching is the fee-free, salaried, one year Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship. Designed and led by experienced schools and teachers, this programme consists of 80% practical classroom experience and 20% off the job training. This 20% allows you ample time to complete specific tasks required for QTS.
